What Actually Predicts Compatibility

Most people assess compatibility by how a relationship feels in the first two months.

That is the least informative window there is. Early chemistry measures novelty and attention, both of which are temporary and neither of which predicts whether two people can run a life together.

The factors that do predict it are less exciting and considerably more useful.

Chemistry Is a Poor Predictor

Strong early chemistry is real, but it tells you about compatibility in the same way a good first day at a job tells you about a career.

It is measuring the wrong period. Almost nothing that ends a relationship shows up in the first eight weeks — money pressure, differing views on family, how someone behaves when genuinely disappointed. Those arrive later, and they are what the relationship is actually made of.

What follows are the five things that keep showing up when relationships work and when they do not.

What Actually Determines Compatibility

1. Values Alignment

What matters most to each person: money, family, career, freedom, security, adventure.

You can have different interests. You cannot have misaligned core values.

Misaligned values create friction that compounds. Aligned values create stability that survives ordinary bad weeks. This is the one factor that rarely resolves itself with time or effort.

2. Communication Styles

How each person processes and expresses: direct or indirect, emotional or logical, verbal or non-verbal.

Conflict styles: fight, flee, freeze, fix. How you handle disagreement matters more than whether you disagree.

Communication styles can be learned and adapted — but both people have to be willing, and willingness is itself a compatibility factor.

3. Attachment Patterns

Secure, anxious, avoidant, disorganised. Formed early in life, and they affect every relationship you have.

The most common painful pairing: anxious and avoidant. One pursues, one withdraws, and the pursuit produces more withdrawal. Both people are behaving reasonably from inside their own pattern, which is exactly why it is so hard to exit.

Attachment patterns do change with awareness and effort. They do not change because the relationship is important enough.

4. Life Stage and Timing

"Right person, wrong time" is not an excuse. It is a real category.

Career-focused or relationship-focused. Ready for commitment or still exploring. Building something or holding something built.

Growth trajectories matter more than current position: two people at different stages who are moving in the same direction usually converge. Two people at the same stage moving apart usually do not.

5. Conflict Compatibility

Not whether you fight, but what happens afterwards.

  • Repair ability: can you come back after a rupture, or does each one leave a mark?
  • Trigger awareness: do you know where each other's sore points are?
  • Resolution patterns: who apologises, who withdraws, who initiates repair — and is it always the same person?

Couples who repair well survive serious conflict. Couples who do not repair well are eroded by minor conflict.

How to Assess Real Compatibility

  • Look at behaviour over time, not chemistry in the early days.
  • Notice how you feel after seeing them. Energised or drained? Calmer or more anxious? This is a surprisingly reliable signal and most people ignore it because it is not a reason they can articulate.
  • Watch how they handle stress and disappointment. That is when actual patterns appear.
  • Ask about their past relationships and listen for structure, not blame. How long, how fast, how they ended. Patterns repeat.
  • Apply all of it to yourself too. Half of any compatibility question is your own pattern, and it is the half you are least able to see.

Which Ones Can Be Worked On

Not all five carry the same weight, and treating them as equal is where a lot of people go wrong.

Workable with effort from both sides: communication styles, conflict and repair patterns, attachment patterns. These genuinely improve, though slowly and rarely without discomfort.

Rarely workable: core values misalignment, and life stages heading in opposite directions. People spend years trying to resolve these through effort, and effort is not the missing ingredient.

Knowing which category a problem falls into is more useful than knowing the problem exists.

Where Your Rhythmprint Fits

Everything above you can assess yourself, given enough time and honesty. The difficulty is that most of it becomes visible only after you are invested, and by then you are the least objective observer available.

Your Rhythmprint is a pattern signature generated from your own calibration data. A compatibility read compares two signatures and names where the friction is likely to sit — around pace, money, how conflict resolves — rather than producing a score.

That distinction is deliberate. A percentage tells you nothing you can act on. Knowing that two people are likely to diverge on how quickly decisions get made tells you what to raise in month two instead of discovering it in year three.

It does not tell you whether to be with someone. It tells you what you are working with.
